Taking a swipe at the big pound stores like Poundland and Pound World, Tesco have now launched 100’s of pound shop areas with many of their UK stores. It isn’t the first time they have tried something like this as in 2009 it dedicated a whole aisle to selling.
Already around 60 of the stores have launched a pound shop area and they plan to roll this out to an additional 300 stores over the next few weeks. In addition to the pound shop areas they are also going to be selling some items for just 50p!
The range will be made up of popular non-food items such as washing up liquid, detergents, kitchen tissues and also some popular health and beauty products. Tesco pound shop buying manager, Paul Bangs said that the new range would allow shoppers to have access to a vastly improved range of discount products.
As mentioned it isn’t the first time that Tesco have tried to take on pound shop stores, in 2009 they dedicated a whole aisle to selling certain product lines at £1 or less. Tesco will aim to beat the likes of Poundland and Pound World however; it isn’t going to be plain sailing for them!
The one thing they cannot do is dedicate a whole store to selling items at £1 or less and what we love as customers is going into a pound store and not having to look for bargains as they are all around us from the moment we walk through the door!
Rather than trying to take on pound shops though, Tesco should look closer to home at discount supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl who offer amazing deals on high quality products. These are far more of a threat to them and their business than what a pound shop will be.
It is a good time for the consumer because whilst the supermarkets and pound shops battle it out prices will continue to get lower and lower. There will be more deals and special offers in store so if you do your research then you can pick up some real bargains and save yourself some money!
