Two discount stores from one shopping centre have begun a price war that has seen prices go down as low as 93p.
Poundland and the 99p Store at Kingsgate Shopping Centre in Dunfermline have gone head-to-head in a price reduction battle and it’s expected that prices will keep on dropping over the next few weeks.
The 99p Store sounded the first war cry by dropping some of their products down to 95p. Poundworld, just five doors away, met the challenge by selling products for 93p, despite their slogan being ‘Yes, Everything’s £1’
Poundland spokeswoman Angharad Couch told The Mirror the price war was great news for consumers.
She said: “Poundland always aims to offer great quality products for amazing value to all its customers. Like all retailers we test competitor response options all the time and this is just one of a number of tactical options.
“Poundland knows how important value is to customers and we regularly check our prices against those of our competitors to ensure we offer the best value.”
They’re the latest in recession busting discount stores to battle with their local competitors after a whole summer of pound shops all over the country reducing their prices to as little as 89p.
The Telegraph reported last month that other pound price wars have been reported in Ipswich, East Ham, Dudley and Chelmsley Wood.
As prices continue to drop for extended periods of time, it’s clearly a matter of seeing who stops standing their ground first. Luckily for pound shops, the bargain prices available at Pound Wholesale mean that should they ever find themselves in their own local war, they’ll be well equipped to head into battle.
