A new survey reveals more consumers are spending their money on social activities and making home improvements. More people are spending on DIY tools and party supplies.
The survey was Visa’s Expenditure Index for April 2015 and it describes the rise in consumer spending.
The findings from the survey highlight 2 important features:
- Consumer spending has increased +2.0% year-on-year
- There has been an increase spending on hotels, restaurants, bars & household goods – Easter Weekend is considered to have helped in this increase
More people are going outside and are willing to spend more money so they can enjoy fun activities. Hotels, restaurants and bars in particular have experienced improved spending by consumers.
Spending on household goods has increased (+2.8%) and expenditure in recreation and culture has also risen (2.1%).
Kevin Jenkins, UK & Ireland Managing Director Visa Europe says:
“April was all about going out and sprucing up the home as consumers enjoyed the Easter weekend and a sunny second half of the month. Spend on household goods including furniture, home accessories and DIY rose as did trips to hotels, restaurants and bars.
“Overall spending volumes were 2% higher compared to a year ago, marking the strongest monthly growth rate since Black Friday boosted November’s figures. The improvements in household spending power could drive growth in consumer spending for several months to come, even as margins and price wars continue to depress total spend on the high street.”
The Expenditure survey has detailed there was a clear rise in household spending in April. In March the spending volume was +1.1% and in April it was calculated to have risen to +2.0%. The survey claims this was the quickest rise in annual spending since last November (where spends increase toward Christmas).
The Easter Break has been considered the catalyst for the sudden spike as more people are off work they have additional time to engage in other activities.
With the approaching summer season and warm weather there is a good suggestion spends will continue to remain strong.
The rise in expenditure on household goods and recreational activities highlights the rise in spends on DIY and party supplies.
